“The day is done; its hours have run,
And thou hast taken count of all–
The scanty triumphs grace hath won,
The broken vow, the frequent fall.
Through life’s long day and death’s dark night,
O gentle Jesus, be our light!”
“Grant us, dear Lord, from evil ways
True absolution and release,
And bless us more than in past days
With purity and inward peace.
Through life’s long day and death’s dark night,
O gentle Jesus, be our light!”
Jesus said, “Walk while ye have the light, that darkness over take you not.” Sometimes darkness is very welcome. It is welcome to the weary man who can scarcely wait till the sun sets to cease his toil. To him darkness means rest. It folds him in its curtains, away from the noise and strife, and restores his exhausted strength. Darkness is welcome in many a home, for it is the signal for the home gathering of loved ones and the joys of the evening fireside. All day the hearthstone has drawn upon the hearts of the scattered household, and the coming of the night is the signal for the home gathering.
